Poll: Name the Eclipse Train
Advertisement
Work @ Doodle
Doodle, the world's number 1 consensus-scheduling service, is looking for a Campaign Manager, an Interaction Designer, and a (senior or junior) Software Engineer.
Oliver Cole has created this poll.
"It is time to choose the name of the next release train (The release after the June Galileo release). By convention, going forward, all release trains names will be alphabetically ordered.
Luckily, there are lots of moons in the solar system; this scheme should work until about 2028 :) This next train will be a moon that starts with H.
THIS POLL CLOSED: Instead vote at:

Not sure what happened to your comment. It was not explicity removed. Maybe some doodle thing. In any case, debate about the naming should be done at:

I'm very curious to hear why my first comment was removed.
Especially in open source where lots of people are contributing on a volunteer basis, differences of opinions should be debated on their merits rather than censored outright.

I'll add my name to the already impressive list of Eclipse "heavy hitters" that say NONE these names is an acceptable choice. Ganymede was bad enough; let's not make a branding mistake here, folks.

None of these names really cut it, sorry.

I am just the messenger here, given the AI by the PC to drive this to conclusion. This has already been much discussed.
Alphabetical order has some good advantages as time goes by. Yup, we want cool. catchy, but instead of just reiterating this endlessly to complain about current choices, come up with an H name (or an I, J..) suggestion. Moons are not a requirement, but does seem to be an ok theme.
Hydra has some negative connotations that I would worry about.

I have to agree that the names here are unfortunate. Sorting is cool (though Galileo < Ganymede). Not every letter has to be included (seems we skipped A, B, D, F). Themes are good (not sure Galileo is a moon).
First and foremost this a marketing name. The name needs to be compelling, memorable, pronouncable, spellable, fit into a sentence, ... Geek value, guideline compliance, ... are great but secondary.

What Would Apple Do?
They would have 'Eclipse 7' not 'Eclipse Simultaneous Release Hagamagasciatica'
These names are absolutely terrible, have terrible usability and I'm embarassed to tell people the difference between planet named releases when trying to convince them to try Eclipse.

+1 for Hydra

I thought the names of the release trains were names of Jupiters moons. I do not see a Helena in this list.

Hydra sounds really good, and Hydra (the monster) is somewhat something close to Eclipse: a big and powerful thing (core and community) with several heads (projects)...
I admit it is very allegorical, but it makes things more fun!

Actually I'd prefer Hydra, too.
And if the council decides to put marketing value over an ordering scheme I'd vote for Atlas or Titan!

You've missed your own point. Naming release trains consecutively according to the alphabet is just one criteria to consider--yet you are sacrificing other important criteria (such as the name's likability) in order to accomplish this one.

Maybe it's time for the Eclipse "Hegemone" ;-) In any case Hyrokkin is cool even though it's named after a "jotun" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyrokkin) .

Most people like to have some ordering of releases-- it's fairly ubiquitous in the software industry.
I understand that you don't have this need for an order, but to ignore the needs of everyone else is hard to understand.
Thanks for playing though.

There's a few other moons starting with H as well, listed here:
http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/our_solar_system/moons_table.html
Pluto has a moon named Hydra, which is a neat name and easy to pronounce.
